Local Authors are Down Home Writers Moneta, Virginia – April 24, 2017- "Down Home Writers" Becky Mushko and Linda Kay Simmons discuss their homespun style of writing and how to publish books successfully. Family lore, childhood recollections, regional history, folklore, familiar places, and admittedly a few lies will be discussed in the "Down Home Writers" event sponsored by the Friends of the Moneta/ Smith Mountain Lake Library (FOL) on Thursday, May 11th at 4:00 PM. Entertaining rural stories as well as Appalachian and Southern tales are collected in the books written by the two local authors Becky Mushko and Linda Kay Simmons over the years. Becky Mushko’s paternal roots run over two hundred years deep into Franklin and Bedford Counties. Her maternal roots run as just as deep into Botetourt and Craig Counties. She is a third generation owner of her family farm in Union Hall. Linda Kay Simmons also has deep roots in the Smith Mountain Lake area, and she has recently returned to Franklin County, Virginia where her ancestors once lived. Miracle of the Concrete Jesus and Other Stories, by Becky Mushko is a collection of 15 previously published short stories about resolute women. Cahas Mountain by Linda Kay Simmons is a multi-generational novel with historical and cultural detail set in Franklin County and Roanoke. These two books and others will be discussed in the program along with tips for self-publishing through Amazon’s CreateSpace. All are welcome to this event, with free refreshments sponsored by the FOL
