Dr. Brian Suttell will discuss various aspects of the civil rights movement, focusing on the role played by students in the 1960s and beyond. He will talk about his recently published book, Campus to Counter: Civil Rights Activism in Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina, 1960-1963 (Mercer University Press, 2023), and share many of the fascinating stories from interviewees who were involved in the movement. Participants will be given opportunities to ask questions and share stories of their experiences. Anyone wishing to purchase the book (optional) can have their book signed with a personal note from the author. Brian Suttell is Assistant Professor of History at Ferrum College. He was a middle school teacher and basketball and football coach for 11 years and has been teaching at the college level for the past 10 years. He lives in Radford, VA with his fiancé Tara and (soon to be!) stepchildren, Elan and Nyra. He enjoys writing and playing music, sports, and running his and Tara’s business, Cypress Trails in Elkin, NC, which focuses on holiday light shows and summer music festivals.
