Court Days, Making Music & Memories, is a tribute to a long-standing tradition in Franklin County.
Years ago, there was no sitting Circuit Court Judge in Franklin County. A traveling judge came into the county, usually on the 1st Monday of each month, and presided over court cases and legal issues for our residents. Franklin County residents gathered here in Rocky Mount on this day to “take care of business” and this gathering grew into a social event. Court Days became a day of social importance in the county, replete with food, music, and trade goods. In addition to visiting with neighbors, family, and friends at these gatherings, one could usually find an assortment of goods for sale. Farm goods, including fruits and vegetables, canned goods, dairy items, poultry, and livestock were offered for sale. And, it is said, that guns and knives were always available for sale or trade. And, it being Franklin County, one could typically find “a little liquor”.
