Shop Smith Mountain Lake this holiday season


The Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce is promoting the importance of shopping local this holiday season with a social media campaign leading up to Small Business Saturday on Nov. 30.


Now in its 10th year, Small Business Saturday is a national movement organized by American Express that helps bring communities together in support of small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.


The Chamber’s campaign includes a Facebook event where businesses may post information about sales, specials and events related to Small Business Saturday. Find a link to the Small Business Saturday at SML Facebook event at

Survey open to study proposed Bedford train station


This Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation has launched an online survey to study the possibility of adding a passenger train station in Bedford.


The purpose is to learn where people in Bedford, Franklin and Botetourt counties travel in the northeast and whether they might use Amtrak to reach their destination. Feedback will help decide whether a proposed train station in Bedford might be viable.

Visitor Center volunteer needed


The SMLRCC is seeking a volunteer for Tuesday afternoons starting Jan. 7, 2020. If you like to welcome people to SML and share what our beautiful community has to offer, you will love volunteering at our Visitor Center! Contact Laura Healey at 721-1203 or


SML Fall Chili & Craft Festival


Approximately 2,000 people came out to enjoy delicious chili, perfect weather and beautiful fall foliage at the 17th Annual Smith Mountain Lake Fall Chili & Craft Festival on Nov. 2 at Bridgewater Plaza. 


“Out of Balance Chili” created by the team from SunTrust Bank earned the top prize for Best Chili. “Virginians for Trump” placed second and “Sweet Whili” was third. First place for both Showmanship and People’s Choice went to the team from Lake Haven Trailer Park, which decorated a bright pink booth with a fiesta theme and wore matching T-shirts.
