About Us

At Hughes Marine, we are passionate about boating. It’s what our family does for fun. We love to fish, wake surf, wakeboard, tube, ski, and of course, just ride around. You may catch us surfing behind a Centurion or cruising in a Sweetwater pontoon or even taking a boat to the coast to go offshore fishing. We are blessed beyond measure because we get to do all this for a living!

Hughes Marine began in 1965 before Smith Mountain Lake had even filled up as the idea of Gaither Hughes. He hired Carroll Yeaman as a mechanic. Unexpectedly, Mr. Hughes died in 1968 and Carroll managed the business for his widow. Carroll saw the dealership through the gas crisis of the 70’s and the economic boom of the 80’s. Carroll bought the business in 1989. Carroll’s wife, Brenda, and son, Andy joined the business about that time. The Yeaman family has promoted boating ever since. It has truly been a family affair with two generations and four family members involved in everything from Sales to Finance to Repair. Carroll and Brenda retired in the Spring of 2012.

Hughes Marine has been something of a success story. Located in Danville in the heart of double digit unemployment and a depressed local economy, Hughes Marine has stayed the course and continued to thrive. Each year, Hughes Marine continues to win coveted TOP 10 awards from Nautic Global Group for National Sales Excellence. Yamaha Marine has also recognized the dealership with top Sales Awards, including trips to Italy, Greece, Japan, and most recently Iceland! We realize that our customers have a choice of where to spend their hard e
